1.01 GMO Ingredients.jpg

Often times, their are many hidden GMO's in processed foods. Unless the package says USDA Organic, Certified Organic or Project NON-GMO Verified, odds are that the following ingredients are probably genetically modified.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) Aspartame

Baking Powder Canola Oil (Rapeseed Oil)

Caramel Color Cellulose

Citric Acid Cobalamin (Vit. B12)

Whey Powder Xanthan Gum

Whew, what a long list!!! The best tips for avoiding these ingredients all together:

1. Buy Organic. Certified USDA Organic products are required by the FDA to have 95% organic ingredients and are 95% NON-GMO. There still may be some GMO's in the product but you have to read the label. If an ingredient is labeld as organic cotton, that ingredient is also NON-GMO, but if it is just labeled as cotton, it might be a GMO. You have to do your research.

2. Look for NON-GMO Project seals. Products that carry this seal are independently verified to be in compliance with North America's only third party standard for GMO avoidance, including testing of at-risk ingredients. However, NON-GMO seals do not necessarily mean it is organic unless you see the ingredient listed as such.

3. Avoid at-risk ingredients. If it is not listed as organic or non-gmo verified, than I would personally avoid products that contain ingredients from the list above. The top GM food crops are corn, soybeans, canola, cottonseed, sugar, sugar beets, wheat and Hawaiin papaya. That means if you don't see the words organic or non-gmo on those eight ingredients, it is 99% likely that they are genetically modified.
